The Movement Against Poverty-Sierra Leone (MAP-SL) is a Non-Governmental Organization, which was formed in March 2003. Early 2003, a group of citizens were motivated by the project co-coordinator to formulate a programme that could benefit not only themselves but the country at large to answer to the global call to eradicate poverty, by making use of all the available means to achieve this aim. As a result, a consultative meeting was held in March were the members decided to make this useful thought a reality. Hence, a five man management team was elected under the leadership of Mr. Andrew V. Swarray who happens to serve as the Executive Director.
Due to logistical and financial constrains the management team view it prudence to initially engage in workshops and public sensitization. Educating communities how to develop and manage their resources, and been engage in small-scale farming. Since the inception of the organization, the main source of funding has been the member’s monthly subscriptions and voluntary pledges and donations. This meager sum has been utilized efficiently in other to make the aims and objectives of the origination a reality. The project management has established four offices one of which is in Freetown as the head office, one in Kenema and Kono the eastern province and one in Makeni in the Northern Province.
The management maintains five specialists in the following areas: Agriculture, Health and Sanitation, Infrastructures Development Capacity building and Basic education, Communication involves (campaign for gender equality, Human right and HIV/AIDS sensitization programmes).To ensures their commitment. They are guaranteed a reasonable stipend and this has to a large extend contributed to the present performance of the porogramme. Hence, the organization performance could be described as impressive despite all the financial and social constrains that hinders the smooth management and implementation of the organization’s activities.
Since the inexistence of the organization as mention interlayer the Director has organized three community base organizations that is working with at the community level assure communities of their selves developments programmes.
BENEFICIARIES
Direct Beneficiaries
The successful implementation of any project especially community based, depends on the responses of the target beneficiaries it is of vital importance to clearly identify the direct and indirect beneficiaries.
The direct beneficiaries will be the group members involved in the direct/primary activities. But those involve in the secondary activities e.g. producing and selling raw materials from the farms will also benefit indirectly as the sub-project will provide a market for them. Other beneficiaries are the users of the product itself at an affordable price for the community in habitants directly involved in the project implementation.
The project activities will also directly benefit the members of the community provide training skills for them.
Indirect Beneficiaries
From the above analysis, the indirect beneficiaries are projecting wide. The communities will fully enjoy the successful implementation of these Cheri stable ventures. Specifically, the beneficiaries are: Dependant of the projects community members who are largely rural based and poor will also indirectly benefit.
SUSTAINABILITY
MAP-SL programs/projects has its main objectives as providing skills, development and training to the community within the project vicinity and members of the origination. As clearly out line in the strategies to achieve the objectives, the continuation of the project after donor’s assistance could have passed out is guaranteed.
It is therefore certain that the close of any implementation period, the organization could have trained reasonable and appreciable number of people and that these people could generate enough revenue to continue with the activities. Knowledge gained during the training and implementation period would be of substantial for the project to be continued.
MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE
Management
Broadly speaking, MAP-SL is manage by three committees comprises of five man committee known as the adversary committee. This five-man committee constitutes representatives from the management committee.
These committees meet once every quarter of the year. However, when needs arises the secretary to each committee may call up meetings in consultation with the head of the district before the stipulated time. However progress and achievements, problem encountered in the implementation process and it’s associated commercial enterprises, which are being debated upon at that level is to be submitted to the Financial/Administrative Officer, then the Executive Director, and in turn to the Board Director and other committee members.
The management committee super sees the entire operation of the organization. Takes policy decision, which includes planning, budgeting and reporting. They also ensure monitoring and evaluation of activities. The organization hope to maintain at its head quarters confidential secretary, a secretary and a manager. Since the management of the organization needs effective coordination, commitment and dedication from all members, it will be stipulated that, a general meeting be held every month at their offices while the executive meeting is held fortnightly.
Structure
The organizational structure of the organization is a model of modules interrelated functions being headed by the Chief Executive Director. The management committee will decide on the day to day operations of the project which in turns simultaneously reports to the advice committee for ratification and approval. The administration and financial sector deals with the clerical staff and finances of the organization. This development organization comprises of agriculture and food security, health and sanitation, Education, capacity building, communication involves (gender equality campaign and HIV/AIDS sensitization programmee) and infrastructure development. |
